The Lesa Systems Ltd chart for type, size and spacing of dowels in floor slab joints is based on the best technical information available.
During 2002, the Queensland University of Technology carried out load transfer capacity tests on a range of shear dowel types. The objective of the tests was to confirm the theoretical information which had been used to determine spacings for Diamond Dowels. The tests confirmed the theoretical results, and the recommended spacings for these dowels remains unchanged in the above charts.
However, the tests indicated that dowels in sleeves with "thick" plastic walls have a dramatically reduced load transfer capacity. The tested dowels were Lesa Speed Sleeves, which have sleeve walls 2.7 mm thick. By comparison, the American Speed Dowel has an even thicker (and possibly softer) plastic sleeve at about 3.1 mm thick.
As a result of the tests, the above dowel chart adjusts the recommended spacings for the use of dowels in thick walled plastic sleeves, so that the load transfer capacity of such dowels will be equivalent to other dowel systems.
